Privacy Policy

Elsewhere is a mobile app for logging real outings and seeing what your friends are up to. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. The short version: we collect what the product visibly needs, we don't sell your data, and there are no third-party ads.

What we collect

• Account info: your phone number (used to sign in and to let contacts who already know your number find you), name, username, and optional profile photo.
• Content you post: photos you capture, activity titles and notes, your rating, tagged friends, and the location of the activity.
• Location: one GPS reading taken when you log an activity, stored with that post and shown to your followers as a map pin. Your current location is also used transiently to center the map and power nearby suggestions; those readings are not stored. Elsewhere never accesses location in the background.
• Contacts (optional): if you allow contact access, phone numbers from your address book are matched against existing Elsewhere accounts to help you find friends. Numbers that don't match are not stored.

How we use it

• To run the product: your posts appear to people who follow you; your map is built from your and your friends' logs.
• To sign you in via one-time SMS codes (see the SMS Program).
• To power the Move concierge, which suggests places using your circle's logs. Conversations with Move are processed by an AI service provider to generate replies.

What we don't do

• We don't sell your personal information.
• We don't show third-party ads.
• We don't track your location outside of the moments described above.

Who sees your content

Your posts, including their location pins, are visible to people who follow you on Elsewhere. Be mindful that a log carries the precise location where it was captured.

Service providers

We use cloud infrastructure (Amazon Web Services) to run Elsewhere and store content, and an AI provider (Anthropic) to generate Move concierge replies. These providers process data on our behalf and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes.

Data retention and deletion

Your content stays until you delete it or your account. You can delete your account from inside the app, under Settings, without asking us. Deletion is immediate and permanent: your profile, your logs, your photos, and your follows are removed, and your sign-in identity is destroyed so the account cannot be recovered. There is no grace period and no archived copy.

Two things outlive deletion, and we would rather say so than surprise you. If someone saved one of your activities to their own bucket list, their saved item remains on their list with your name detached from it. And logs posted by other people may still name you as someone who was there, because that text belongs to their post rather than your account.

Blocking and reporting

You can block anyone from their profile. Blocking hides the two of you from each other and removes any follows between you. The person you block is not told. You can also report a person or a post; a report stores who filed it, what it points at, and anything you wrote, so we can look into it. Reports are not shown to the person reported.

You can make your account private in Settings, which means new followers need your approval before they see anything. People already following you keep their access.

Children

Elsewhere is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
